Oregon Trail Blues - Live

by The Kubes

/

about

One of The Kubes' oldest original songs, this tune was written by Travis in Canada while playing the Oregon Trail video game. This live recording is from one of The Kubes' house parties in 2019. The setlist included mostly covers and two originals, this song and "Apache Woman".

The lyrics are satirical and include many references to both the video game and the real-life Oregon Trail. Travis's word about the prices rising refers to how supplies become more expensive as the game progresses. The "thousand pounds of hell" is quite literal, referring to the wagon load carrying food, guns, and clothes.

lyrics

Well I've been riding on the trail
I got one thousand pounds of hell
Well I've been riding on the trail
I got one thousand pounds of hell
Seems like if I keep going
I might as well get a thrill

Well the passes are tight
And the snow is pounding on the wagon
Yeah the passes are tight
And the snow is pounding on the wagon
If I keep on going
You know I'm gonna do me
Some shaggin'

Well the price is risin'
And the dollars keep gettin' short
Yeah the price is risin'
And the dollars keep gettin' short
Babe I know it's been a long, long time
Back to Blaine County Port

Well I passed the Donner Party
And they was havin' lunch
Yeah I passed the Donner Party
And they was havin' lunch
Something's wrong with them
I believe I have a hunch
