about

New from the Kubes:
An all-instrumental all-improvised musical journey through the undersea depths, led by the four Kubes at the helm.

This album has been constructed together in the studio to capture the flow of ideas and passages that make up these songs. The tunes are unlike anything that comes before it, featuring extensive exploration as a trio, going where the moment takes them. Musical sketches pepper this album with riffs, breaks, and many exciting moments to hear in this new album, recorded this summer.

Take the dive through 8 tracks that each bring you to a far corner of musical improvisation. The first seven tracks feature the final recordings of the Kubes as a trio, and the last two tracks are select jams from the quartet's studio sessions.

---TRACKS---

Joe’s - (19:32)
The first complete jam here, unedited in its almost 20 minute length. A stop to eat before a journey in the ocean. A great introduction to what this album is about: musical conversation between the trio. The guitar, bass, and drums all shine here in their individual parts as well as when the groove comes together.

Aim For The Bushes - (11:53)
Funk inside and out, above and below the sea. This tune’s aquatic nature highlights the plant life under the sea and the flow of water around it. Flow with the bass guitar taking you on a deep trip.

The Cephalopod Strikes - (17:06)
Plunge into the depths, this track takes the oceanic vibe to another level. Featuring ebbs and flows to vast peaks of dynamics, Cephalopod makes up several stitched jams edited to make a whole. Fight with the giant squid and toil in its lair of dark, cold waters.

Fisherman’s Ranch - (8:37)
Inspired by the dirt racing track of the same name, this song is a high-energy take with notes of jazz fusion and jazz fission. As waves crash, the drums echo the great seas of the Pacific. Strong guitar leads the helm into a roaring tide of rhythm section sound.

Whaling Excursion - (17:15)
A fantastical tune filled with imagery surrounding the great animals of the deep. Going off the coast, the riffs pile on with multiple shared rhythms between Travis & Spencer. The scope of this track is as grand as it is wide, with great locked-in groove in the middle section of the tune. Take a listen to put yourself on the ship with your own crew of Kubes.

- NOTE: Jam House Records does not support, endorse, or encourage the heinous and often illegal act of whaling. This song is purely for historical and artistic purposes. Donate to anti-whaling causes here: seashepherdglobal.org

Big MT - (14:47)
A trip further into the ocean, the ‘empty’ takes the listener plunging into the depths comprised of three-part interplay between the instruments. Edited in conjunction with atmospheric effects to complete the sound. The sea is as big as it is empty, so the tune stretches and makes its wide claim across the leagues under.

Red - (13:38)
The first jam here featuring the keyboard of Shyan Mahmoodi. On this tune, he leads the group in a harmonic minor freeform exploration. Listen for Spencer on the synthesizer bass, making for a quartet unlike any other Kubes before it.

Club Kubes - (10:24)
A techno-stylized bouncing tune that moves around throughout the group, taking guitars, keyboards, and bass motifs that each member can share and expand. Landry's drums keep the pace and set the tone for each section of this broad piece.

Total runtime: 1:53:12

Journey with the Kubes into a vast sea of free-flowing musical exploration. The most experimental album to come from the Texas psychedelic group takes the improvisation of their earlier work to new levels of spontaneity.

Experience the creation of each song, as it was happening, with a focus on united grooves and forming new musical conversations. Recorded over the course of several months at the conclusion of the Flying Saucer Tour, this album is comprised of rehearsal session recordings of the Kubes exercising their musical chops. At any point in each rehearsal the group would take a chance to freely improvise with each other in a controlled environment.

The results are a knitted mesh of ideas that highlight what the Kubes sound like on any given day. Brash, brazen, and funky, the Kubes make a theme out of the watery improvisations with tracks like “The Cephalopod Strikes” reaching over fifteen minutes in length. Each song formed with a simple sketch, leading into the ideas of the day and evolving as each member bounces motifs around. This album is a first for the Kubes, entirely written on the spot.

Joining the group in August, keyboardist Shyan Mahmoodi brings a new element to the band, and brings his experience with him. The two jams featuring Shyan conclude the album with a fresh sound of the Kubes quartet.

All tracks have been mixed and 24-bit mastered in Pro Tools at the Jam House Records Studio. Recorded in Fort Worth, Texas. All songs written and arranged by The Kubes.
